Course Overview
This course introduces the candidate to the methods and techniques necessary for the identification
and development of models that describes business processes. The following topics are covered:
- The Xpdian Strategic Business Framework – This framework discusses the necessary
layers of the enterprise and its contents. It elaborates on the strategic layer, the
business layer and the technology layers that describe the systems that support
business processes.
- The techniques necessary to identify and develop business models (using the UML 2).
This includes the following:
- Development of strategic models
- Value chain definition
- Functional decomposition
- Domain modelling (identification of business and systems entities and the
relationships between entities)
- Workflow (process) modelling
- Entity lifecycle modelling
- Business rules – A discussion about business rules, what it is, the different categories
of business rules and how to document business rules.
- Transformation – This topic addresses the necessity of ensuring that the enterprise
needs to change with ongoing business and market demands. It covers the subtopics
of defining the desired enterprise state and how to transform the enterprise from the
current state to this desired state.
- Practical techniques:
- Managing the Business Analysis project – How to plan for the business
analysis project, the project lifecycle and phases.
- Using Business Patterns – a brief discussion of patterns and how it may be
used to quickly develop business models.
- Running the Business Analysis Workshop – all of the techniques on how to
plan for, execute and document the business analysis workshop.
- Facilitation – A brief discussion on workshop facilitation and how to handle
and manage the participants.
- Managing change – A brief discussion on the soft skills necessary for a
change project and how change can be managed taking the stakeholders into
account.
- Practical sessions. To ensure the skills transfer to the candidates, a large portion of this
course is dedicated to the practice of the techniques taught. The candidates will work
through a comprehensive case study from the strategic layer through to the modelling
of the business layer.
Audience
This course is targeted at individuals that may need background knowledge of business analysis,
and individuals that will manage and work on projects in a business analysis environment.
Prerequisites
It would be beneficial to the attendees to have worked in a business environment for at least two
years. The delegates must also have a good understanding of the UML 2. Laptops are required for
this course.
Expected outcomes
The attendees will have a conceptual understanding of business analysis and how that can be used
in the establishment of sound business architecture, and how that business architecture fits into the
overall enterprise architecture. They will have a sound working knowledge of how to perform
business analysis. They will understand the techniques to be used, how to plan for and run the
appropriate workshops, how a business analysis project should be planned and how to approach
persons affected by changes in the organizations.
